Women in Africa have played a vital role in social and political movements, from fighting for independence to protesting against violence. Despite their contributions, they are often excluded from decision-making roles. Digital technologies offer opportunities for women-led political movements to overcome barriers such as limited time and mobility restrictions. However, they also face risks, including the digital gender divide and biased algorithms that make their movements less visible. Women who are politically active online are also vulnerable to gender-based violence and disinformation. To support women-led digital activism in Africa, efforts must take into account the digital divide and diversify support. Combining tactics such as online and street activism can increase impact. Embedding political activism in cultural contexts and traditional practices is a promising approach. Governments and institutions can establish policies and standards to empower women politically while regulating tech companies and addressing barriers to political engagement both online and offline.
