The "Empower Her" campaign which kicked off on March 22, 2024, aimed to address the Gender Bias on Wikipedia  where stories of African women changemakers in democracy, elections and governance, are often told in male-dominated spaces where significant aspects of their achievements are omitted and information is distorted.4. The campaign included a month-long Wiki Edit-a-thon. This community-driven initiative sought to inspire inclusion and amplify the voices of African women in politics, journalism, and government on Wikipedia and Wikidata.  It aimed to improve the representation of women by encouraging the creation and enhancement of articles about women in African politics, journalism, and human rights, aligning with the principles of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections, and Governance (ACDEG).

Implemented by Code For Africa in collaboration with the Charter Project Africa, the 'Empower Her' project brought together domain experts, Wikipedia volunteers, technologists, data enthusiasts, and designers. It was a collective effort that aimed to engage civil society organizations, media, and multilateral agencies, providing them with training, technical support, and access to verified articles and open data sets on women's political participation.

Key activities included introductory sessions, workshops, and mentoring. These opportunities not only enhanced participants' digital content creation skills but also provided a platform for them to update and create articles on women in African democracy, elections, and governance. Top contributors were recognized and received prizes, further motivating them to continue their valuable contributions.

The campaign recorded 2 programs, 81 editors, 55.5K words added, 535 references added, 36.2K article views, 87 articles edited, 52 articles created, and 882 Commons uploads as recorded in the dashboard statistics. Additionally, participants created 225 new articles and items, which can be viewed on the article list table on the campaign meta page.

The project empowered African women by making their achievements more visible and accurately represented online, fostering a more inclusive political landscape through active citizen participation and knowledge sharing. Participants gained valuable skills, built networks, and contributed to strengthening democracy and gender equality.
